New (?) YouTuber (Not My Job, Probably Ever)

Some of you might know that I’ve started making YouTube videos.  Yes, specifically YouTube.  I haven’t really embraced this nor do I have any ambition of making (to make?) this a job.  It’s more of a hobby, with an idea in my mind of maybe coming up with a channel idea to promote this website.  You may have noticed that I have a page on this site where people can sign up for English lessons.  If I can get the algorithm to suggest my videos to other people, it might eventually be a good way to get more students.  For the moment, though, I just want to make videos regularly enough to get the algorithm’s attention.

It’s not lost on me that I’m only trying to impress a mindless robot.  Yes, that bothers me a little bit, but this is the world we now live in, like it or not.

Anyway, I suck at it.

The problems are numerous.  For one, I don’t have a team.  It sure would be easier to come up with ideas, and then film them, with some help, but at the moment I’m on my own.  This is not a complaint; I’m just saying.  Another issue is that the only equipment I have is my iPhone (for filming) and my computer with some programs OBS (for talking head vids), VideoScribe (for cartoons), QuickTime (for getting the videos from my phone to the computer), GarageBand (for converting my phone’s stereo audio to mono) and DaVinci Resolve (for editing).  Oh, and PhotoPad (for making thumbnails).  That sounds like a fair few tools, but yet another issue is that I have no real talent for anything that I’m trying to do with my videos.  One more is having trouble coming up with ideas.  Arguably the worst of all is my lack of ideas.

The lack of ideas is actually hilarious because I very often find myself doing things and not recording them.  I just come up with a very vague idea, get started implementing it, and get halfway through or even completely through doing it before suddenly realizing that I should have made it a video.

For example, one day I didn’t know what to do for dinner, so I just took a frozen boneless chicken breast out of the freezer to think of what to do with it later.  Later that day, I decided to bake it with some barbecue sauce that I found in the back of the fridge, and then cut it up and serve it to myself with some leftover rice.  As I was finishing the meal, LONG before dinner time, placing it on a plate and covering it with cling wrap, and sticking it in the fridge for heating up in my microwave at dinnertime, I thought, dammit, that could have been a Moron Cooking video.  Damn.

Well….  Maybe I’ll get better at realizing a video opportunity as I go along.  Cooking the above-mentioned chicken rice dinner gave me an idea.  It is emphatically not an original one, but it’s a good one.  Get this:

I’m sick of cooking every night.  I thought I could just start buying nothing but frozen dinners every week or so.  Turns out, however, that frozen dinners are just not a thing here. If I can make a dinner in the early afternoon to heat up later in the evening, though, maybe I can just cook a whole week’s worth of dinners in one day and toss them in the freezer and just pull one out in the morning while having breakfast and heat it in the microwave that evening.  I can make my own frozen dinners.  Why not?  It might work.  That’s my next video plan.  Even if it turns out to be a bad idea (and I don’t know why it would be), it would still make a good video.  Failures can make good videos, too, so long as I can laugh about it.  Maybe I can make one video tomorrow of the cooking, and then make a short every day that week showing how each meal works out.  Hey!  Great idea!

Well, no promises, but we’ll see how it goes.  That’s only one idea, but maybe writing about this will make me more aware of video ideas as they occur.  More often, at least.

We’ll see.  Watch my channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCg82SHOPwS4OF0cbCWH4MXA if you’re at all interested.  Thanks for reading this.

ABOUT THE SKINT EXPAT

I have been an expat for more than 30 years now. I’m originally from the United States, though at this point that hardly matters. In that time, I’ve played music with bands and recorded and released solo music, I’ve been an English teacher for most of that time, and now I’m doing a blog about all of it.
